Hope opens the doors and windows to let the fresh air in. Love is the sage that banishes the stale air of despair.

Thank you, dear Penny. Your Pasts and Presents class was my absolute favorite. It got me thinking! Truly thinking. I wish I could go back in time and be a young student again! We have to hold on to hope. And yes hope is action. I see hope in the power of the people gathering to protest, refusing to be silenced. Sending love and ever so grateful for your wisdom , optimism, and humor!

Your words remind me of a poem, "Kindness," by Naomi Shihab Nye. There she writes, "Before you know kindness as the deepest thing inside, you must know sorrow as the other deepest thing. You must wake up with sorrow. You must speak to it till your voice catches the thread of all sorrows and you see the size of the cloth. Then it is only kindness that makes sense anymore" I sense that the existential threats of climate change, deep inequalities and new global wars are making it harder to deflect from sorrow. That means the chances are greater than ever that we will find that kindness deep inside, and live from that place. There is reason to be optimistic!
